56% of the population in Senegal uses solid fuels for cooking purposes on a daily basis


The traditional three stone way of cooking is the most common practice in Senegal, with up to 92% of households still using open fires

These practices translate into high rates of deforestation due to fuelwood clearing, charcoal and logging. The use of open fires has also serious effects on the respiratory health of its users due to air pollution.

THE PROJECT

This cookstoves project in Senegal distributes efficient and tailored cookstoves to meet the needs of its users while improving their life quality

Improved Cookstoves distributed in this project are designed and manufactured to meet the practical needs of local communities, who are interested in solutions that reduce smoke exposure.

Designed with a gender perspective, this project aims to reduce deforestation through the distribution of 50.000 efficient firewood and charcoal cookstoves. By increasing the availability and affordability of improved cookstoves (ICS), wood collection decreases by 30%, contributing to the conservation of local forests.

With an estimated amount of annual average emission reduction of 372,867 tCO2e, the use of ICS will actively improve local communities’ life quality and health. Project activities include the building of technical and financial capacities on alternative livelihood mechanisms, as well as the enhancement of vulnerable groups’ capacity to sustainably utilize land resources.

LOCALLY DESIGNED AND PRODUCED

CERER, Centre d’Études et de Recherches sur les Énergies Renouvelables, local ally in providing tailored cookstoves

ALLCOT has partnered with CERER to locally design and produce tailored cookstoves that fit the needs and requirements of the users in the area.

The aim is to provide tools that satisfy practical needs such as large cooking capacity and intense and rapid heat generation.

Traditional cooking methods involve using three stones to create an open fire. The smoke and fumes produced by the fire can lead to respiratory problems, including chronic bronchitis and pneumonia.

Improved Cookstoves (ICS) come as an effort to promote cleaner, more efficient cooking methods among the local communities.

The project is part of UNFCCC Clean Development Mechanism’s African Cookstoves Initiative Programme of Activities

The purpose of this initiative, coordinated by ALLCOT, is to implement efficient cookstove and dryer technologies. It seeks to improve air and life quality for the local communities.
