THE REGION AND THE COMMUNITIES

Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is an irreplaceable and unique ecosystem, declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

in 1979

The Arhuacos have inhabited the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta for more than 2.000 years. For them, their territory is a sacred space in which rocks, water sources, trees, animals, and plants are vital for the sustainability of the Sierra Nevada and the Universe.

THE PROJECT

Müsesi seeks to have the native people restore cultural and environmental strategic areas of this territory by planting native species.

Legal and illegal mining and illicit crops endanger the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, turning it into a red zone of deforestation in Colombia.

The project is dedicated to revitalizing essential cultural and environmental sites by focusing on four key pillars

Müsesi, a term meaning ‘from the summit to the sea’ in the Arhuaco language, is our commitment to revitalizing the natural and cultural heritage of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

At the heart of this project is the collaborative effort between native communities and environmental stewards to restore and protect key areas through the strategic planting of native species.

  • Restoration of 810.98 hectares. The main goal is to restore 810.98 hectares of vital native species of native species.

  • Six municipalities impacted. The restoration work extends to the municipalities of Aracataca, Fundación, Santa Marta, Ciénaga, Dibuya, and El Copey.

  • Estimation of 731,765 trees planted.

  • Carbon capture impact. The project aims to capture an average of 46,053 tons of CO2 (TCO2) annually (totaling of 1,381,590 TCO2 over 30 years).

POSITIVE OUTCOMES

Project activities and goals

Environmental Impact

Reforesting 811 hectares of degraded land, fostering its protection, and avoiding further deterioration, reducing 1.3 million tCO2 over 30 years.

Habitat enhancement for 784 species of birds (459), mammals (184), reptiles (92) and amphibians (49).

SOCIAL Impact

Strengthening the culture and social organization of 10.710 people of the Kogui Malayo Arhuaco Reservation to exercise proper governance of their territories and protect their culture.

Economic Impact

Implementing sustainable productive projects aligned with the life plans of the communities, contributing to the improvement of their quality of life and the sustainability of the project.

THE ALLIANCE

A partnership based on equity and transparency

Having transparency and fairness as a priority, the project is based on the alliance between the indigenous peoples as project owners, the entity Conservation International Colombia ensuring fair agreements, and ALLCOT providing the technical support to achieve the project goals.

People of the Kogui Malayo Arhuaco Reservation as project owners

The Kogui Malayo Arhuaco Reservation is the communal owner of the land.

They are responsible for the tree planting and for their protection. They define also the investments they will make with the resources acquired through the sale of carbon credits.

Conservation International Colombia and its knowledge

of the region

The NGO brings its experience and knowledge in working in the Sierra Nevada territory and with the indigenous communities to ensure fair and transparent agreements

ALLCOT’s technical expertise

Provides technical support to communities for the design and development of the actions and procedures necessary to consolidate the investment in their territory.

THE TESTIMONY

Planting trees, Arhuacos contribute to returning the balance of nature

Dugunawin, member of the Arhuaco indigenous people and Danilo Villafañe, Arhuaco Governor, tell us about the project from the perspective of their ancestral knowledge.

Listen to their testimonial!

A unique and irreplaceable territory

The protection of this region is crucial due to the richness and uniqueness of its biodiversity:

ALLCOT, Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

«If our spirit wanes, so will everything else….. That is why we cannot let our guard down in the care of our territory; that is why we strive to safeguard it.»

– Camilo Izquierdo Villafañe, High Mamo of the Arhuacos at La Guajira and Magdalena
